Business Manager
Salary: £25,000 – £32,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Location: Snelsmore, Newbury, RG14 3BU
Hours: 08.30-16.30 Monday to Friday, flexible working hours during school holiday periods
Holiday Entitlement: 25 days per annum excluding bank holidays.

Outdoor Academy has established itself as one of the leading outdoor providers for special education. Since 2007 our land and water programmes continue to engage and provide essential support packages for vulnerable young people.
We have an exciting position available for a Business Manager to manage the office and new business development. The ideal candidate will be confident in working independently to provide a high-level of customer service, have experience in marketing and finance and hold strong administration skills.
This is an exciting time for the Company with many future projects underway, we are confident that the right person will enjoy working with our dynamic team.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
- Assistant to the Managing Director of Outdoor Academy
- Managing office duties, implementing and maintaining office procedures and general administration
- Meeting and greeting guests/clients ensuring safeguarding procedures
- Update and maintain Outdoor Academy Database
- Be responsible for staff DBS and certificate updates
- Manage student achievement certificates
- Update Safety Operations Procedures and Risk Assessments as required
- Manage administration of six monthly equipment checks
- Book-keeping tasks for company accounts using Xero accountancy package
- Work with the accountants to manage staff payroll
- Manage and implement marketing campaigns, including website and social media updates
- Research and analysis of sales
- Event planning and organisation as required
- Supplier relationship – purchase/hire of products and services
Qualifications
- Approved Enhanced DBS (OA will provide application process)
- Fluent in English
- High level of education
- Sound computer literacy including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook Knowledge of PowerPoint and some experience of databases would be an advantage
- Able to use email systems and the Internet Accountancy Packages Experience
- At least 3 years’ office experience including reception, secretarial duties and finance.

Senior Outdoor Instructor
Salary: £30,000 per annum, work 40 weeks term-time, plus 6 residential/event weekends per year, and get paid for 52 weeks!

Hours: 08.00-17.00 Monday to Friday (occasional evenings, overnights and weekends)

We have an exciting position available for a Senior Outdoor Instructor with an immediate start. This position will suit someone who likes variation as no day is ever the same…it’s all about the mini adventure!
The ideal candidate will be confident in leading off-site group and one to one programmes, have a proven track record of working with young people with challenging behaviours. You should be comfortable working independently and have experience in leading an instructor team.
Alongside our outdoor alternative education provision, we deliver to a wide variety of clients through multi-activity programmes, residentials, DofE expeditions, event entertainment and corporate activity days.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
- Plan, deliver and review suitable outdoor activity sessions for groups and individuals.
- Be confident in facilitating and taking a lead role with a team of Outdoor Instructors.
- Coordinate session logistics including student transport using company vehicles.
- Plan and prepare suitable educational material appropriate for all needs and abilities.
- Support young people to achieve personal goals, accreditations and record data using our internal reporting system.
- Ensure all activities conform within current operating procedures and risk assessments whilst keeping the delivery fun, relaxed and engaging.
- Effective incident management including student emotional and behaviour support.
- Take a lead role to ensure all health and safety practices are conducted regarding building, equipment and vehicles.
- Keep current and up to date with relevant NGB qualifications and assist with staff in-house training.
Essential qualifications:
- Minimum four years’ experience working with young people in special education
- British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader (or equivalent)
- BSUPA Level 1 or British Canoeing SUP Inland Sheltered Water Coach
- Climbing Wall Instructor
- ArcheryGB Instructor
- Mountain Bike Instructor Technical Environment
- Basic/Lowland Expedition Leader
- Experience in wilderness activities
- Full UK Driving Licence – minimum two years driving experience with minibus and trailer
- 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid
As well as the above, the candidate should hold at least three of the following qualifications:
- British Canoeing Coach Award (or BCU/UKCC Level 3)
- British Canoeing Moderate Leader White Water Award
- BSUPA Level 2 or British Canoeing SUP Moderate Environment Award
- Rock Climbing Instructor
- Summer Mountain Leader

Our adventurous activity programmes are delivered offsite for small groups and intensive one to one sessions.
