    Outdoor Academy has established itself as one of the leading outdoor providers for special education. Since 2007 our land and water programmes continue to engage and provide essential support packages for vulnerable young people.

    We have an exciting position available for a Senior Outdoor Instructor with an immediate start.  This position will suit someone who likes variation as no day is ever the same…it’s all about the mini adventure!

    The ideal candidate will be confident in leading off-site group and one to one programmes, have a proven track record of working with young people with challenging behaviours. You should be comfortable working independently and have experience in leading an instructor team.

    Alongside our outdoor alternative education provision, we deliver to a wide variety of clients through multi-activity programmes, residentials, DofE expeditions, event entertainment and corporate activity days.

    Main Responsibilities and Duties

    • Plan, deliver and review suitable outdoor activity sessions for groups and individuals.
    • Be confident in facilitating and taking a lead role with a team of Outdoor Instructors.
    • Coordinate session logistics including student transport using company vehicles.
    • Plan and prepare suitable educational material appropriate for all needs and abilities.
    • Support young people to achieve personal goals, accreditations and record data using our internal reporting system.
    • Ensure all activities conform within current operating procedures and risk assessments whilst keeping the delivery fun, relaxed and engaging.
    • Effective incident management including student emotional and behaviour support.
    • Take a lead role to ensure all health and safety practices are conducted regarding building, equipment and vehicles.
    • Keep current and up to date with relevant NGB qualifications and assist with staff in-house training.

    Essential qualifications:

    • Minimum four years’ experience working with young people
    • British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader (or equivalent)
    • BSUPA Level 1 or British Canoeing SUP Inland Sheltered Water Coach
    • Climbing Wall Instructor
    • ArcheryGB Instructor
    • Mountain Bike Instructor Technical Environment
    • Basic/Lowland Expedition Leader
    • Experience in wilderness activities
    • Full UK Driving Licence – minimum two years driving experience with minibus and trailer
    • 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid

    As well as the above, the candidate should hold at least three of the following qualifications:

    • British Canoeing Coach Award (or BCU/UKCC Level 3)
    • British Canoeing Moderate Leader White Water Award
    • BSUPA Level 2 or British Canoeing SUP Moderate Environment Award
    • Rock Climbing Instructor
    • Summer Mountain Leader

    Successful candidates require:

    • Minimum of two references including last employment
    • Proof of identity and qualifications
    • Permanent UK National Insurance Number, UK residential address and UK bank account
    • Candidates with a non-EU passport must be able to prove that they have the right to work in the UK

Our adventurous activity programmes are delivered offsite for small groups and intensive one to one sessions.
